What replacing a chimney cap actually involves

The first step is measuring, not shopping. On an open masonry fireplace we measure the clay tile liner itself: outside dimensions, how far it stands above the crown, and whether it is round, square, or one of the ovals common in California. Multiple flues in one stack change the approach. Then the old cap comes off. Rusted lag screws often shear off inside clay tile, so fresh anchor points get drilled away from the old holes. We inspect the tile edge before fastening anything new to it.

Crown condition decides part of the job. Crowns cracked and spalled by UV and winter rain will not hold a cap that mounts to the crown surface. Sealing or rebuilding comes first. Skip that and the fasteners work loose.

Prefab chimneys in 1980s-forward tracts work differently. The cap is usually part of the chase cover. A corroded cover holding standing water, with rust streaking down the stucco chase, means the whole cover gets replaced: fabricated off-site to measured dimensions, with a cross break so water drains.
