Why San Diego flues need relining, and how the liner goes in

Clay tile liners fail here for two ordinary reasons. Older unreinforced masonry stacks move. Earthquake and settlement shear the mortar joints between tiles, and the tiles crack at the shoulders. The second reason is fuel change. Gas logs and B-vent inserts put cooler, wetter exhaust into a flue sized for wood fire. So do direct-vent conversions. That moisture condenses inside the tile. It soaks mortar, rusts the damper, and stains the brick face. Coastal salt air speeds all of it.

Relining starts with measurement, not pipe. Appliance outlet size and total flue height come first. Every offset counts too. We scan the flue with a camera first. Narrow prewar tiles often need an ovalized liner, or the tile shoulders broken out from the top. Where clearance to framing is tight, the liner gets wrapped insulation. An insert gets a tee at the thimble. Top plate and storm collar go on next. A spark arrestor cap finishes it.

Prefab fireboxes are a different animal. In 1980s-forward tracts, the Class A chimney is listed as part of the firebox assembly. Dropping a flex liner into that chase is not a repair. Those need manufacturer-specific sections.

We will say no to a liner inside a stack with displaced brick and open cracks. That hides a structural problem instead of fixing it. Crown repair and chase cover replacement usually ride along.
