What fireplace cleaning actually involves in San Diego homes

Most San Diego fireplaces burn a few nights a year. That changes the job. Low-use flues collect less creosote and more debris. Bird nesting, rodent droppings, spiderweb, and crumbled clay tile shards turn up often in prewar and midcentury masonry flues. The sweeping is often the fast part. Figuring out why the flue is dirty in a particular way takes longer.

Wood-burning masonry gets brushed top-down with rod-and-brush, matched to flue size. A vacuum runs at the firebox with the opening sealed. Smoke shelf and smoke chamber get hand work (parging failure hides there and a brush alone will not reveal it). Firebox refractory panels and mortar joints get checked with a light, not glanced at.

Prefab metal fireboxes in 1980s-forward tracts are different. Panels are manufacturer-specific and brittle. Aggressive wire brushing on a prefab firebox damages it. Chase covers get checked from above for standing water. Rust streaking down stucco usually means the cover already failed.

Gas log conversions and direct-vent inserts do not need creosote removal. They need glass, burner ports, logs, and pilot assembly cleared, plus a check that the damper clamp is present. Coastal air seizes dampers, so that gets tested by hand.

If the liner is cracked, cleaning it changes nothing. We say so before sweeping.
