What has to be true before an insert can go in?

First question homeowners ask: will it even fit? Insert installation gets measured before it's sold. Front width, rear width, depth, and firebox height all get taped. Damper frame position matters too. On open masonry fireplaces with clay tile flue liners in prewar and midcentury homes, the tile is often too narrow for the insert's liner, or offset at the smoke chamber. That decides the job more than the appliance does.

A wood or pellet insert needs a continuous stainless liner to the top, insulated, connected direct to the appliance collar. No "slammer" installs into a bare tile flue. The damper plate usually comes out or gets cut. Smoke chamber parging failure and deteriorated refractory panels get addressed first, since you're about to cover them permanently.

Factory-built prefab metal fireboxes in 1980s-forward tracts are different. The listing governs. Only the manufacturer's approved insert or panel goes in a prefab, and the Class A chimney and framed chase have to be sound. Rusted chase covers with standing water, or rust streaking down stucco, mean water is already inside.

Gas inserts add a gas run, sediment trap, and shutoff you can reach. Direct-vent units need coaxial pipe routed to a legal termination. B-vent and gas log conversions need the damper clamped open, permanently. Seized coastal dampers get replaced, not forced.
