Gas fireplace won't light, or lights then quits

Two symptoms cover most calls. The pilot clicks but never catches. Or the burner runs a minute, then dies. The second usually means a weak thermopile. It generates the millivolts that hold the gas valve open. Salt air near the coast corrodes the connections at the valve terminals. Soot on the thermocouple tip does the same thing. A dirty pilot orifice starves the flame so it no longer wraps the sensor properly. None of that is a valve failure, though the valve gets blamed often.

Older gas log conversions in open masonry fireplaces bring a different problem. Many were installed without a damper clamp. Code wants the damper held open on a log set. We check that first, along with draft, because a clay tile liner sitting unused for years often has bird or rodent nesting in it. Combustion products then come back into the room instead of up the flue.

Direct-vent inserts in 1980s-forward tracts fail differently. Glass gaskets flatten, the sealed chamber leaks, and the unit shuts down on its own safety switch. Ghosting or white film on the glass points there.

Some prefab fireboxes are past service life. Panels are manufacturer-specific and sometimes discontinued. We say so rather than patching a firebox that shouldn't hold fire.
