What pilot light repair actually involves
Gas gets shut off at the appliance valve first. On direct-vent inserts the glass comes off next, and the gasket gets inspected while it is out. Then the pilot assembly is exposed: hood, orifice, igniter electrode, thermocouple or thermopile. The spark gap gets checked and reset. We light it and watch the flame shape before touching anything else. A pilot flame has to wrap the sensor tip. If it is lazy or blue-lifting, or leans off the probe, the sensor never gets hot enough to hold the valve open.
Millivolt readings come next, taken at the valve terminals and compared against the manufacturer's spec sheet. Readings are checked twice: open circuit, then under load with the switch closed. A thermopile that looks fine at rest and collapses under load is the most common miss. Orifice blockage is the other one.
